Central to my thinking as an educator is the importance of building relationships of mutuality and trust to foster an inclusive learning and living environment.

Dr. Patricia J. Lopez

On April 14, 2023, Dartmouth College’s Committee Advisory to the President denied Dr. Patricia J. Lopez tenure. We are outraged by the College’s decision, and the trivialization of Dr. Lopez’s capacious, generative work and mentorship. Her tenure denial is a disturbing reminder of the College’s continued commitments to white supremacy, which is evident by the 74% white faculty it promotes and protects. With over 50% of the Dartmouth students identifying as non-white, the College marginalizes and underserves students of color by denying Dr. Lopez tenure.

We ask that you extend your support and solidarity by sharing testimony and help us apply pressure onto Dartmouth, an institution that purports to care about faculty, staff, and students of color just as it repeatedly marginalizes us.

Dr. Lopez began a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at Dartmouth in 2014. The College hired her as an Assistant Professor immediately following. Throughout her time at Dartmouth she has published cutting edge and influential books, academic articles, book chapters, and non-refereed articles. She has lead initiatives to redesign how students learn and has been a leader in active pedagogy at the College as demonstrated by being the most popular Professor in Geography — both in student demand for her classes and as a thesis advisor.
